Sanctuary: Safe Haven

Chapter 90: Explosive Greeting

Canna and Kael continued their journey, following the direction Stormtusk had pointed out. Although they weren't entirely sure if they were on the right path anymore, Canna's instincts urged him to press on. The forest grew denser and the air thicker as they moved deeper into the unknown territory.

By midday, Canna was crouched by a peculiar plant, studying its intricate leaves and unusual colors. The plant was fascinating, unlike anything he had seen before. His fingers traced the edges of its leaves when Vorgrim's voice echoed in his mind. "Master, there are two people approaching. They're using earth magic to cover their presence."

Canna's senses sharpened instantly. Despite his heightened awareness, he hadn't detected the two figures approaching, a testament to their skill. He continued examining the plant, his body language betraying no sign of alarm.

Moments later, a blade was suddenly pressed against his neck. Canna's gaze remained on the plant, unperturbed, as he felt the presence of the person behind him. The blade's edge was cold and sharp, but Canna stayed calm, trusting Vorgrim's abilities.

In an instant, Vorgrim appeared behind the man holding the blade, his own weapon pressed against the man's throat. "Move an inch, and you'll regret it," Vorgrim growled.

At the same time, another figure was trapped by Mortem, who had silently materialized from the shadows. The second man's arms were pinned behind him, his expression a mix of surprise and frustration.

Canna finally lifted his head, his eyes meeting those of the tattooed man who had threatened him. He nodded once, and Vorgrim and Mortem released their prisoners. The man with the blade stepped back, visibly stunned by the turn of events.

"Well, that's not a nice way to start introductions," Canna said, his tone calm but firm.

The two barbarians exchanged glances, clearly taken aback. The one who had held the blade, a tall man with tribal tattoos covering his muscular arms, sheathed his weapon. "I apologize," he said, his voice deep and rough. "We thought you were a threat."

Just then, Kael returned, carrying a bundle of dried leaves. He stopped short, his eyes widening at the sight of the two strangers standing before Canna. "What happened here?"

Canna gave a small smile. "A misunderstanding, it seems. These two thought we were intruders."

The taller of the two barbarians stepped forward. "I'm Draven, and this is my brother, Bane. We are scouts from the village nearby. We've been tasked with ensuring the safety of our territory."

Kael raised an eyebrow, still holding the dried leaves. "And you thought attacking us was the best way to ensure safety?"

Draven looked slightly sheepish. "We didn't expect to find anyone here. Our magic usually keeps us hidden."

Mortem and Vorgrim stood silently by Canna's side, their presence a silent reminder of the power that had thwarted the ambush. Canna nodded to Draven and Bane. "Your skills are impressive. My subordinates are equally skilled, as you've seen. We're not here to cause trouble. We're simply passing through."

Bane, who had remained silent until now, spoke up. "Your strength is evident. We can see that you're not ordinary travelers. What brings you to our land?"

Canna glanced at Kael before answering. "We're on a quest to restore my domain. Our path led us here, and we believe there's something important in this direction."

Draven studied Canna for a moment before nodding. "Very well. If you're not a threat, you should come with us to the village. Our leader will want to meet you."

Canna and Kael exchanged a glance, both sensing that this encounter was significant. "Lead the way," Canna said.

As they walked, Draven and Bane remained vigilant, their eyes scanning the forest for any signs of danger. The journey to the village was filled with an uneasy silence, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves and distant monster calls.

Upon reaching the village, Canna and Kael were struck by its simplicity and integration with nature. Huts made of wood and stone blended seamlessly with the surrounding forest, and the villagers moved with a quiet efficiency. Children played near a central fire, their laughter a stark contrast to the tense encounter earlier.

Draven and Bane led them to the largest hut, where an imposing figure stood waiting. The leader of the village, a woman with striking features and an air of authority, stepped forward. Her eyes were sharp, taking in Canna and his companions with a discerning gaze.

"Welcome," she said, her voice calm but commanding. "I am Liora, leader of this village. Draven and Bane have told me about your encounter. Who are you, and what brings you here?"

Canna stepped forward, meeting Liora's gaze with respect. "I am Canna Yakane, and this is Kael. We are on a quest to restore my domain. Our journey led us here, and we mean no harm."

Liora studied them for a moment before nodding. "Your strength is clear, and your intentions seem genuine. Our village values peace and strength. You are welcome here, but know that we do not tolerate deceit."

Kael stepped forward, offering a respectful bow. "Thank you for your hospitality, Liora. We seek knowledge and guidance to aid in our quest. Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated."

Liora's gaze softened slightly. "We are a village of barbarians, striving to survive amidst the dangers of this forest. You have traveled far into its depths. We can continue our conversation in the evening, once my son returns from his hunt."

As the villagers went about their business, Canna and Kael were shown to a hut where they could rest. The simplicity of the village was a stark contrast to the complexity of their mission, but it offered a sense of peace that was hard to find elsewhere.

Later that evening, as the sun set and the village gathered around the central fire, Liora joined Canna and Kael. "Tell me more about your quest," she said, her eyes reflecting the flickering flames.

Canna shared their story, explaining the need to revive his domain and the journey they had undertaken so far. Liora listened intently, nodding occasionally.

"You are on a noble quest," she said finally. "Our village has records of..." Before she could continue, Canna stood up and summoned a sword into his hand. The village chief was perplexed, unsure of what was happening. Suddenly, a figure smashed into the hut they were in, his great sword meeting Canna's blade.

The impact was explosive, causing Canna's feet to sink into the ground, leaving craters. The unknown figure moved with incredible speed, sending a powerful kick to Canna's chest, propelling him out of the hut.

Canna had already sensed the figure's approach and made the right call to prepare his sword. He then ordered Mortem and Vorgrim to stay put, determined to handle the confrontation alone.
