Chapter 138: Walk in the garden
Seraphina seemed to sense my uncertainty, because she reached out, taking my hand once more. "You're doing better than you think," she said softly. "You care about these people, about what happens to them. That's what makes you different from who you were before. You've changed, Elara… for the better."
Her words were like a balm to my troubled heart, easing the tension that had been building within me. I looked up at her, meeting her gaze, and for a moment, the world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of us in that quiet, sunlit room.
"Thank you," I whispered, my voice barely audible. It wasn't just for her words—it was for everything. For standing by me, for believing in me, for helping me find my way when I felt lost.
Seraphina's smile widened, and she leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "You don't have to thank me," she murmured against my skin. "I'm just glad I get to be here with you."
I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of her presence wash over me. In that moment, I felt a deep sense of gratitude not just for Seraphina, but for the life we had built together, for the strength we had found in each other.
When I opened my eyes again, the throne room seemed a little less daunting, the weight of the castle a little easier to bear. The unease that had plagued me earlier was still there, but it was softened by the knowledge that I wasn't alone.
Seraphina pulled back slightly, her eyes searching mine. "What do you say we take a walk in the garden?" she suggested. "I think we could both use a little fresh air."
I nodded, the idea of spending some time in the open air appealing. "That sounds perfect."
With our hands still clasped together, we made our way out of the throne room and into the garden. The sun was higher in the sky now, its golden light filtering through the leaves of the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
The air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers, the gentle hum of bees buzzing from one blossom to the next.
As we strolled along the winding paths, I found myself relaxing, the tension in my shoulders slowly melting away. The garden had always been a place of peace for me, a sanctuary where I could escape the pressures of the castle and lose myself in the beauty of nature.
Seraphina seemed to sense my shift in mood, because she squeezed my hand gently, her voice soft as she spoke. "I've missed this," she said, her eyes drifting over the vibrant blooms. "Just being here with you, enjoying the simple things."
I glanced over at her, taking in the contented smile on her lips, the way the sunlight danced in her eyes. "Me too," I admitted, my voice warm with affection. "It feels… right."
We continued our walk in comfortable silence, the only sounds around us the rustling of leaves in the breeze and the distant chirping of birds. The worries of the morning seemed far away now, replaced by a sense of calm that settled over us like a soft blanket.
As we reached a small clearing surrounded by tall, fragrant roses, Seraphina stopped, turning to face me. "Elara," she began, her tone serious but gentle. "I want you to know that I'm proud of you. I know things have been difficult lately, but you've handled it all with such grace and strength. I'm so grateful to have you by my side."
Her words took me by surprise, and I felt a lump form in my throat. I wasn't used to hearing such open praise, especially from someone I admired so much. "Seraphina, I…" I trailed off, unsure of how to respond.
She stepped closer, her hands coming to rest on my shoulders, her gaze locking onto mine. "You don't have to say anything," she said softly. "Just know that I mean every word. You're incredible, Elara. Never doubt that."
I swallowed hard, trying to push past the emotion that threatened to overwhelm me. "Thank you," I managed to say, my voice thick with feeling. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Seraphina's smile was warm and reassuring as she leaned in, her lips brushing mine in a tender, lingering kiss. The world seemed to stand still for a moment, the only thing that mattered being the connection between us, the unspoken bond that had grown stronger with each passing day.
When we finally pulled away, I felt a sense of peace settle over me, a quiet certainty that, no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together. And in that moment, I knew that, with Seraphina by my side, I could handle anything.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of quiet moments and stolen glances, the two of us finding solace in each other's company.
The weight of the castle, the demands of the throne all of it seemed distant and unimportant compared to the simple joy of being together.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden light over the garden, Seraphina turned to me, a soft smile playing at her lips. "It's getting late," she said, her tone light. "We should probably head back inside."
I nodded, feeling a pang of reluctance at the thought of leaving the tranquility of the garden behind. But as I looked at Seraphina, the warmth in her gaze, the love that radiated from her, I knew that, no matter where we were, as long as we were together, everything would be alright.
With our hands still intertwined, we made our way back to the castle, the evening air cool and refreshing against our skin.
The castle loomed ahead, its walls bathed in the soft glow of twilight, and as we approached, I felt a renewed sense of purpose, a quiet determination to face whatever challenges lay ahead with Seraphina by my side.
And as we crossed the threshold, stepping back into the familiar embrace of the castle, I knew that, no matter what, we would find a way to overcome the darkness that threatened us. Together, we would find a way to build a future worth fighting for.
