Chapter 409 Mercy is for the Weak.
"Ever since birth, the only thing that I have ever known is war." Xie began.
"Mhm," Sol nodded, locking in to the story and sitting there silently while the man recalled all of the major events that led to the demise of his home realm, the death of his family, the fall of the King, his descent into madness after watching the entirety of the world he knew burn.
The reason that Source seemed to have more peace than the Grand Collective was because they killed an entire realm in the pursuit of false peace and then the smaller clans and races joined together and suppressed the powerful, Godslayers were basically extinct there, and the Vatui had been forced into ruin.
At the end of his explanation, Xie took a breath and then raised his head to look at Sol, from the way he had seen the Golden Godslayer behave, his mannerisms and small habits, he was expecting Sol to be cold and distant in the face of this tale especially after he had remained silent and not broken character once,
However, upon looking at his new master, the Demi-Demon was surprised when he found a small smile on Sol's face, not one that was cruel or one that mocked him, but rather Sol had understood his pain perfectly, it was an expression of condolence. "Why are you looking at me like that?" He asked.
"I wonder," Sol mused, straightening his posture and clearing his throat. "I once destroyed an entire world of demons, no... it was a universe of them," Sol explained.
"Yes, I remember this from my recent read of your history; you challenged a race of demons that had been invading other worlds and destroyed every single one of them, the explanation of why was rather vague, but I am sure that you would not have done it if you did not have a good reason." Xie, who had already placed his trust in Sol answered with complete sincerity and open-mindedness.
"Yes, summoned to Ikaris's homeworld here, Atla, I fought for ten years starting as a powerless human, and I watched an entire planet die, slaughtered at the hands of demons, and then Summoned to Arkadia, I realised that it was the same race of demons again, they killed my first family, and then I nearly lost my second family to them as well," Sol explained.
"So... " Xie seemed interested in this tale, since it was not explored in the Codex.
"The demons that reside in the Sol Collective were not like the ones that you knew, they have no true realm or universe, or even a collective for themselves, they were birthed from darkness with the sole purpose of extermination."
"They were never going to stop, so I put an end to them, every last one, I kept this a secret from everyone else, but whenever I had the free time I used to venture out in search of the ones that never returned to Origin, the ones that claimed that they would change, and I killed them too, billions over the last two years completely snuffed out."
"If I may be so bold, Master Vestic," Xie raised his hands, clasping his fist into his palm in a gesture of apology and slightly inclining his head for what he was about to say.
"Go on," Sol nodded.
"What was the real reason that you killed off the demons here?" Xie asked. "I know you said they threatened everything, but from where I stand, it seems that you had the power at that time to entrap them all or isolate and send them away rather than kill them."n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Indeed I did," Sol nodded. "However, much like you, I was consumed with rage to the point that I could not even see myself, their target shifted from destroying everyone and everything to Ikaris, and I snapped," He explained.
"She was stolen from me after our first child was killed by one of them," Sol narrowed his eyes.
Although Xie was stronger than Sol, he still feared the man that sat across from him, because on one side of his coin there was purity, there was light, he was able to be a complete saint more worthy than anyone in the heavens, and yet with just a few words Sol could become worse than the devils he loathed.
His mana could undergo change like nothing the man had ever seen, his tone, his entire being, when Sol was extremely enraged, it caused an effect of terror to grasp his allies and enemies, the only person who had ever been immune to this was Ikaris.
"My goal was to kill them all from the start, I had several ways that I could have done it and maintained myself in the process, however, when I found out that the Demons nearly had their way with my wife, I lost a part of myself that I can never regain, I tore it out and then incinerated them along with it." Sol held out his hand and created a flame the size of a candle's.
"What is that?"
"I pretend to have it for the sake of my friends and loved ones, but the truth is, empathy towards my enemies, mercy; those are traits and emotions that I no longer feel, I barely have any sympathy left either."
"This is the philosophy that little sister Jena spoke of," Xie nodded, having a much clearer picture he could now understand why Sol had evolved from a vengeful being to an unmerciful god.
"If I am offended, truly offended, you will die, if you target my family or friends, I will destroy yours in return, if you take my eye I will destroy your homeworld, for every wrong that I am unjustly punished with, I will kill thousands, millions, Billions, I do not care for the lives of the men, the women, or the children, I will kill every possibility of someone coming after me in the future."
"That is..."
"Yes, the same philosophy of demons, that is what I learned from them, when I laid there and watched my first love get tortured, stabbed, healed and tortured to the brink of death for half a day until she had lost her sanity and sense of reality."
"After watching my best friend burned and eaten alive before my very eyes, I came to the gruelling conclusion that mercy is for the weak, sympathy is for fools, if my enemy raises his hand against me, I will crush him completely, I will wipe out everything that he is associated with so thoroughly that the name may never be uttered again." Sol leaned forward.
"This is my real reason for the strength I seek, I want an insurmountable power than not even Giza can contest, the summit of it all."
"That is a grand dream that not even I dared to dream." Xie nodded nervously. "And, this power you seek; what do you plan to do with it?" He asked.

"Nothing, hopefully, I mean, aside from Giza and my alter-ego, Umbra, I have no need for this power, it is a deterrent to any future enemy, a warning that the Vestic name and everyone who associates with it is off limits."
"What, truly?" The demi-demon seemed shocked. "You do not desire something like a throne of thrones, are you not the King of all Heavens?" Xie was disturbed by how simple Sol's dream was after the fact of his mad chase for power.
"That's right, the title means nothing to me, the throne is not something I need, want, nor desire in any way or form, my goal is a simple life where I can watch my little girl grow up with the security that she will never be targeted like I or Ikaris was, to just..."
"Be left alone." Xie mused. "My father used to say the same thing, he initially had a desire for peace, he wanted to negotiate with his enemies, but in the end they betrayed him and he perished at their blade."
"I do not want peace, I want fear," Sol answered. "Your father may have had an admirable goal, but trusting your enemy to play by your rules is stupid, a man who fears the ground you walk on will always remain at hand, he will watch you, prod you for weaknesses, and if he finds none, he will abandon his hostility."
"You are an interesting man, Sovereign Vestic." Xie chuckled and scratched his smooth chin, seeing the veil around them starting to fall. "I thought I had figured you out from the Codex, but you are far less complex than I thought you were, but at the same time, your thoughts are evolved beyond the social mind," He praised Sol's merciless resolve.
"Once again, I will pledge myself to you, on my soul and mana," The man stood and then took a knee next to Sol. "It is my desire to see how you accomplish this grand goal!" He declared, standing at the same time as the full barrier went down, with Sol standing as well.
"You want a fight when all is said and done, right?" Sol asked with a knowing smirk.
"Indeed I do, I will want to see what the new strongest being in all reality is capable of."
What do you think?
